Maple

Welcome to Maple - Year One Class

Welcome to Maple class! We are a class of Year 1 children based at our Dunbury Infants base.

SubjectFocus for the half term
Reading

We are currently reading Toto the ninja cat and the great snake escape by Dermot O'Leary. Daily phonics takes place every morning, where we practice speed sounds, blending and segmenting. We are partner reading books matched to the children's phonics stages and reading for fluency and intonation as well as looking for answers to questions within the text.

At home: Keep reading with your children and writing it in their records. We would love to hear all about the books you are sharing with your children, so please do let us know!

Writing

In year 1 our focus text this half-term is the short narrative 'The Little Red Hen.' We are looking at the key features of a narrative text. We will be focusing on using capital letters and full stops in our own writing and working hard on forming our letters correctly.

We will also be looking at writing instructions this half term.

At home: Please support correct letter formation. We celebrate all writing efforts. Please do share any work your child has completed at home - we love to see it!

Maths

In Year 1, we will be learning about place value and additive structure (within 10), position and direction, place value (within 20).

At home: Practice number bonds to 10 and 20, and number formation to 10.

RE

In R.E we are enquiring 'Who made the world?' looking at creation from a Christian standpoint.

At home: Discuss what beliefs you have at home - why is it important to you and your family? What does your family believe about the creation of the world?

Science

In Science we are looking at 'How can we classify different animals?'

We will also be exploring the changing season as we move from Summer to Autumn. Our weekly Forest School activities will support this learning as the children explore the natural world around them using a variety of senses.

At home: What are the 5 different senses? What activities do you do daily that use them? Are there any activities that use more than one?
