Oak

Welcome to Oak Class - Year Two

Welcome to Oak Class! We are a KS1 class made up of our Year 2 children, based at our Dunbury Juniors base.

SubjectFocus for half term
Reading

We will be reading 'Tumtum and Nutmeg: A Circus Adventure' by Emily Bearn this term as an introduction to a short chapter book. Daily phonics takes place in the morning, where we practice speed sounds, blending and segmenting. Some of our Year 2 pupils will then move on to Whole Class Reading, where they read longer texts whilst learning to answer comprehension questions. Reading books are matched to the children's phonics stages to help the children to develop their reading fluency and intonation.

At home: Keep reading with your children and writing it in their records. We would love to hear all about the books you are sharing with your children, so please do let us know!

Writing

In Year 2 we are writing a narrative based on the story 'Little Red Riding Hood'. We will be looking at the key features of a narrative, choosing the vocabulary and literacy skills that best suits this style of writing. We will be focusing on using 'or' as a conjunction and using apostrophes in contractions.

At home: Keep practicing your handwriting, focusing on the sizing and accuracy of letter formation. We celebrate all writing efforts. Please do share any work your child has completed at home - we love to see it!

Maths

Year 2 are starting the unit 'Addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers' where the children will be using partitioning (into tens and ones) to add and subtract.

At home: Keep practising your times tables! Click here.

RE

In R.E we are enquiring 'Which of the 5 pillars play a key role in Ramadan?' looking at the importance of Ramadan within the Islamic religion.

At home: Discuss what beliefs you have at home - why is it important to you and your family? What does your family believe about the creation of the world?

Science

In Science we are looking at materials discussing the topic  'How can I identify and classify plants?'

We will also be exploring the changing season as we move from Spring to Summer. Our weekly Forest School activities will support this learning as the children explore the natural world around them using a variety of senses.

At home: What are the 5 different senses? What activities do you do daily that use them? Are there any activities that use more than one?
