Welcome to Maple - Year One and Year Two
Welcome to Maple class! We are a mixed class made up of Year 1 and Year 2 children based at our Winterborne Kingston base.
|Subject||Focus for the half term|
We are currently reading Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl as our class story. Daily phonics takes place every morning, where we practice speed sounds, blending and segmenting. We are partner reading books matched to the children's phonics stages and reading for fluency and intonation.
At home: Keep reading with your children listening to them read and sharing your favourite stories with them.
We are starting the term writing a narrative based on the book Granadad's Island by Benji Davies. We will be developing our use of descriptive vocabulary, capital letters, full stops, and using 'but' as a conjunction in our sentence stacking and independent work. We are ending the term writing a report based on our History topic Toys From the Past. Letter formation and handwriting has also been big focus for us this half term.
At home: Letter formation and handwriting practice as regularly as possible.
Year 1 are currently looking at Number and Place Value looking at the composition of number to 20, additive structure within 20 and position and direction.
Year 2 are currently looking at Number and Place Value, additive structures based on multiples of ten and length and mass.
At home: Keep practicing counting in tens both forwards and backwards and discussing what is 10 less and ten more than a number.
Creation - Who made the world? We have been learning about the creation story, who our creator is and what they have done for us. We have also discussed how we can look after Gods creation and give thanks to all that has been given.
At home: Discuss your beliefs, and how we can show thanks for all we have.
In Science we are looking at animals including people concentrating on life processes such as movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction and nutrition.
At home: Look at life cycles and how animals grow and change.
History- How do our toys and games compare with those of children in the 1960's?
Music- We are exploring the 7 dimensions of Musical composition and performance. We will be looking at Structure, dynamics, pitch, tempo, duration, timbre and texture.
P.E.- Ball handling and core skills.
PSHE - Me and my relationships focusing on feelings, emotions and conflict resolution.
Art - Self-portraits and Picasso.
